Vamp movies |

Hey wayne,I've been into the older vamp movies for
awhile. I mentioned Nosferatu. I also like the Bela
Lugosi Dracula and a foreign movie called Vampyr. I can't
remember who directed it but its an old one and based on
a short story by Sheridan LeFanu. Then theres a version
of Nosferatu starring Klaus Kinski and directed by Verner
Herzog. I really enjoy the style of some of the european
vamp films. Maybe it's because europe is so much older
than north america and it's the original home to the
vampires.

Good call,D,I was kinda thinking that we should move this conversation to the movie forum. Anyway,I noticed that you mentioned "Nosferatu",I just wasn't for sure which version you were speaking of. I thought it might have been perhaps the version with Willem Dafoe. Of course though,I had forgotten that, that particular movie wasn't titled "Nosferatu",it was "Shadow of the Vampire",in which Willem Dafoe portrayed the Nosferatu actor "Max Schreck". Lastly, regarding Europe, have you ever visited there? Wayne |

Hi D, I believe you are referring to Carl Theodor
Dreyer's "Vampyr" from 1932, a
semi-silent film from the director of the 1928 classic
"The Passion of Joan of Arc". Vampyr
was Dreyers next film and his first
"talkie". Some notable talent worked on
this film; cinematographer Rudolph Mate' (director of
George Pal's "When Worlds Collide" in
1951 amongst others) and Hermann Warm; set creator of
Robert Wiene's "The Cabinet of Dr.
Caligari".
I love this movie as it really stands alone in the vampire genre, I cant think of any others quite like- very dream like and half-real. The DVD I have of this film is GREAT! Not because its the best quality (though I suspect its the best available) but because it also has as a supplement by early stop-motion animation pioneer Ladislas Starewicz. "The Mascot" made in 1934, tells the story of a toy dog that comes to life and stumbles into an netherworld bacchanal inspired by hieronymus Bosch and hosted by the Devil! Films like Corpse Bride, Nightmare Before Christmas, and Mad Monster Party would not have been made where it not for this guys early work. The DVD is from the Blackhawk Flims collection and distributed by Image entertainment and for what its worth comes with my highest recommendation. Pick it up... you'll thank me! P.S. Director Harry Kumel's 1971 euro-classic "Daughters of Darkness" is another of my all time favorite vampire films. Ultra-stylish and extremely influential ("The Hunger" owes alot to it), Oh! and "Vampyros Lesbos" for all the same reasons and a fantastic soundtrack as well. Mark. |

Wayne, regarding Europe no Ive never been there but
its one of my dreams to especially since my parents are
both european. I liked that Willem Defoe movie Shadow of
the Vamp alot. Not many people have seen it but its very
atmospheric and Defoe is one of y favorite actors. What
did you think of it? I'll have to take a look at the
Christopher Lee Dracula. Would you believe Ive never seen
it.
Yes!That's the one (Dreyer) and you described it perfectly. It makes you feel as though you are in a waking dream. I would love to own it but I've never seen it for sale. Daughters of Darkness is something I watched on your recomendation about a year ago and liked it. I found out after it was Based on a real vampire, the countess of bathory. Has anyone heard of her? Speaking of "waking dream" movies
(sorry, I hope I'm not hijacking this thread!) but has
anyone seen "The Machinist" yet? It's
been described as being influenced by Roman Polanski,
David Cronenberg and Stanley Kubrick who are some of my
favourite directors. And Christian Bale is a brilliant
actor--there's alot of Best Actor Oscar buzz for his
performance in that movie.

Hello D
I found Shadow of the Vampire to be somewhat disappointing, the main reason's being, firstly,I didn't really know what to expect upon first viewing it,secondly,I was looking forward to some bloodshed and gore. It wasn't that type of vampire movie at all though,if I'd known that from the beginning, then I probably would've appreciated the film more. Aside from just about everything else though,I thought that Willem Dafoe did very well in the role, and the makeup was top notch, very creepy indeed. Regarding the Countess Bathory, any true fan or follower of vampire lore know's of her. In some circles she is referred to as the female version of Dracula. PS: I left a message for you in the "Djinn" thread. Wayne |

The Machinist | ||

Hey Sheila
I enjoyed that movie very much,I especially tend to be drawn to movies with plots/themes such as with the Machinist. Plus,I enjoy movies even more when I can at least somewhat identify with the characters,I could identify with Christian Bale's character 100%. Except bodywise, man, could you believe how much weight he lost for that role? He looked like a walking skeleton! Anyhow, losing that much weight doesn't seem like it would good for your health,I hope the paycheck he received for the movie was worth it. Wayne |

I had the feeling there might be something about
the situation in that movie that I could identify with
myself. I don't know if you remember how I told you
awhile back how I have this occasional semi-paranoid
fantasy that life isn't real, but a dream? --Which I
understand has something to do with the premise of The
Machinist.
Yeah, I heard Christian Bale lost something like 50 lbs to play that part. He did it by eating only a can of tuna and an apple each day. Yikes! Just thinking about it makes me hungry. Infact, I think I'm going to mosey on down to McFucks' and get me a Big Mac xoxox Sheila |

I loved Shadow of the Vampire...I mean what a
brilliant concept that they used a real
vampire!!
But I really love and I know I'll get yelled at for this but I don't care Interview with the Vampire and even Queen of the Damned...I also enjoy the Underworld movie, and the first Blade...anyway I enjoy action and crap exploding more than being scared...although I do definitely enjoy the first silent vampire movies. Oh and Discovery Civilzation had a great biography on the Countess Bathory...she was one twisted chickee Kitty |

Sure,Sheila,I remember that conversation.
As for what I think,as I believe that I've said before, the dream life and wake life are both real in my opinion,at least to a point anyway, the "realities" of the two however differ slightly. For example,in dream's I can see, taste, smell, touch and hear, everything that I'm able to do while awake. So in many way's,the dream life and wake life are quite similiar. One major difference,is that in your dream life, you can do or have anything you wan't,without much or any effort. In wake life, what we wan't is not always so easily attainable, and sometimes not attainable at all. That's my two cent's on this subject. Wayne |

Hey Christina
Why would anyone yell at you, just cause you enjoyed Interview with the Vampire and Queen of the Damned? Just for the record,I enjoyed both of those movies as well. Wayne |

"Vampires Kiss" starring Nicholas
Cage in one of his best performances. Its about a guy who
goes crazy and thinks hes a vampire. Very
funny!

Re: Vamp movies | ||

I enjoy every vampire movie I come across, its
probably my favorite genre (if we can give them a genre
of their own).
Someone mentioned Roman Polanski earlier...so we definatly should mention "The Fearless Vampire Killers, or Pardon Me but Your Teeth Are in My Neck", wich is such a cool film, and definatly something to add to a dvd collection I also really enjoy the newer movies out lately like Underworld and Blade, they are alot of fun. (I also liked Interview with the Vampire....but didnt like Queen of the damned. They tried too hard in that later one to rush out a movie before they lost the rights, and squeezed two books into one, where you lose any character development, and try to drive a plot with too many holes into a couple of hours. It was a tragic waste of some good stories) Rawn |

"Fearless Vampire Killers" I'd almost forgotten about that little gem. Pity about Sharon Tate.
