Cloning Neanderthals |
Lead | |

About 12 years ago, the first DNA of a Neanderthal was recovered and now geneticists are talking about using it to create a clone so they can study it. I
personally think it's disgusting on so many levels and will lead to any number of ethical minefields. But when scientists are able to do something, they
*will* do it. Thoughts?

I thought they made it illegal to clone human beings.
When we are talking about Neanderthal, we are talking about primitive man, aren't we. I don't think it is a wise idea, just because we don't know the implications on cloning human species. 99 |

Did they make cloning human beings illegal?
At any rate *technically* a Neanderthal is not a human being (Homo Sapiens Sapiens). I think they are called Homo Neanderthalis but yes, closely related to modern man and the idea that they were stupid has recently been disproved. They discovered they were quite artistic (rock paintings, played flute-like instruments).

They discovered they were quite artistic (rock paintings, played flute-like instruments). I remember them making a big fuss about it. George W. Bush even gave a speech saying that caution must be made in this research. It was around the time that they had cloned Dolly the sheep. Even though they aren't human beings like us, they are still gentically similiar. Kind of neat that those cave drawings. 99 |

I really do not think they should, I don't think anything good will come out of it.

I don't think that anything good could come out of it either Jess.

I read a book about Neanderthals still being alive in remote parts of the planet, actually a couple of them.
Almost Adam by Petru Popescu: "Paleoanthropologist Ken Lauder finds evidence of a living ancestor to modern Homo sapiens while exploring the African savannah. As political unrest grows, he heads into the savannah to learn more about his amazing find. He doesn't realize at first that this fantastic discovery of his is being monitored by men intent on killing him. The result is a chase through the wilderness as he tries to keep himself and a young hominid alive. Neanderthal by John Darnton: Matt Morrison and Susan Arnot, archaeologists and ex-lovers, are summoned to investigate an odd find: an apparently new Neanderthal skull. They rush to Tadjikistan and foray into some of the least hospitable terrain in Asia. Not too unexpectedly, they find their quarry only to discover a long-lost mentor who is guarding unsettling moral, political, and archaeological secrets that threaten their lives and those of the reclusive Neanderthals. Untangling the puzzle involves figuring out why one tribe is vegetarian and peaceful, the other martial and carnivorous; why their brains are larger than those of contemporary humans; and how they communicate without speech. When government agents intrude and threaten the scientific find, the two scientists must survive, rescue their old friend, deceive American and Russian intelligence gatherers, and balance a study of an astounding archaeological find with the interests of the tribes. |
